No one wants to stop elephant poaching more than people who own ivory or have businesses that work with ivory. People who admire ivory respect the animals it came from and detest the scourge of poachers.
The rise of demand in China for ivory, combined with half-hearted one off sales that failed to normalize a legal trade, have given rise to today's poaching problem and have created a speculative, lawless prohibition-style environment for ivory in Africa and Asia.
Instead of changing strategy and encouraging legal ivory trade to undermine the true criminals, governments and NGOs are doubling down in the US on broken strategies by banning domestic sales of ivory brought to the United States at least 25 years ago.
We want to stop the persecution of law abiding citizens and refocus efforts on strategies that will actually save elephants.
